Kaarslichtconcert: Marco Danesi & Helikon Quartet
Several times a year, the hundreds of candles and the beautiful acoustics provide unique concert evenings in the Portuguese Synagogue. Tonight's concert starts with meditative dreams and ends via klezmer with the liberating power of dance music.
Kaarslichtconcert: Marco Danesi & Helikon Quartet
Marco Danesi & Helikon Quartet
For this occasion, Italian clarinetist Marco Danesi will play together with the Helikon Quartet, four string players who have been playing on various Dutch stages and festivals since 2015. The program includes two half-hour pieces.
The first piece, by the Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov, is inspired by the 'dreams and prayers' of Isaac the Blind (ca. 1160–1235), a French rabbi and mystic. Golijov used elements from klezmer and Jewish prayers such as the Unetaneh Tokef and Avinu Malkeinu.
The second piece, by the American David Bruce, who grew up in England, is inspired by music that emerged during oppression. One of the best-known examples of this is 'Messiaens Quatuor pour la fin du temps', which was written and performed in a concentration camp in 1940-41. In his piece, Bruce celebrates the liberating power of dance, based on the 'rain boot dances' of black miners in South Africa under Apartheid.
