The Impossible Love of Tristan and Isolde
'A memorial to love', Wagner called his opera Tristan und Isolde . Britten's Violin Concerto contains a similar emotional power. Against the background of the looming Second World War, Britten, only twenty-five, composed this emotional and complex work. As Britten himself wrote to his publisher: 'It is without doubt my best piece so far. It is rather serious, I am afraid, but there are a few tunes in it!'.
