Mixing Memory and Desire

The music of the Gerry Mulligan-Chet Baker Quartet still stands strong, as Mixing Memory and Desire proves. Gerry Mulligan brought the baritone saxophone into the limelight and Chet Baker was acclaimed for the beauty of his trumpet playing. Around 1950 they led a special group together, the first of its kind, with two wind instruments, bass and drums and without a harmony instrument. This gave them complete freedom in the solos, while in the written material the lines for baritone saxophone and trumpet were very refined.

Mixing Memory and Desire started as a project based on the music of the Gerry Mulligan-Chet Baker Quartet. The 4 musicians added their own ideas to it, with respect for the original pieces. In 2017 they presented their first album on our stage. In the spring of 2023 the successor Strange Destination was released, with only their own pieces.

Occupation

Mixing Memory and Desire was founded ten years ago by renowned reed player JanWillem van der Ham, who plays baritone sax. The group also consists of Felicity Provan on cornet, Raoul van der Weide on double bass and George Hadow on drums.
