Mozart's Requiem

While working on a commissioned requiem, 35-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart fell seriously ill. Testimonies from contemporaries confirm that the composer wondered whether this Requiem would become his own funeral mass. Mozart, very familiar with the traditional funeral mass, wrote a piece with a deeply personal intimacy. This unfinished masterpiece, completed by his pupil Süßmayer, is dramatic and moving, as if Mozart were trying to imagine what it would mean to have to leave this world. His Requiem is thus a moving, personal document.
