Porgy and Bess is considered a landmark work in American music history because of its progressive blend of jazz, blues and classical music. In October, The International Symphony Orchestra from Lviv and the National Choir of Ukraine 'Dumka' will bring this masterpiece to the stage. The opera is about the attempts of the black street beggar Porgy to save Bess from the clutches of her violent, possessive lover and a drug dealer from New York. Important themes: love, loss, social class struggle and the search for identity.
George Gershwin
George Gershwin was one of the most influential American composers of the 20th century, best known for his unique fusion of classical music with elements of jazz and popular music. His compositions span a wide range of genres, from operas and symphonic works to musicals and pop songs. Other George Gershwin pieces will be performed before intermission, including An American in Paris and I Got Rhythm .
