Schuberts Winterreise

In Schubert's famous song cycle Winterreise, we are taken on an icy journey through a winter landscape, where a lonely soul, who has just lost his beloved, wanders. As he moves through the cold, deserted landscape, he is constantly reminded of his broken heart. His search for inner peace eventually leads him to a frozen lake, where he meets the Leiermann (Death). Although Winterreise is often sung by a male voice, the power of the story and the metaphor of human suffering are universal and approachable to everyone. You will hear Barbara Kozelj (mezzo-soprano) and Nino Gvetadze (piano) in a performance that knows how to touch the listener to the core.

About Barbara Kozelj

The versatile and charismatic Slovenian mezzo-soprano Barbara Kozelj has grown in recent years to become an international star in the vocal firmament. She began her singing studies in Ljubljana and continued them in The Hague and Amsterdam, where her singing teacher Sasja Hunnego spoke with admiration about her talent: 'Her Slovenian melancholic soul and the warmth of her personality resonate in her beautiful voice.'

After her debut with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in 2013, her career took off. Under Iván Fischer, she sang Bach's St. Matthew Passion at Carnegie Hall. The press described her voice as 'deep and dark' and 'enchanting'. Barbara performs with the world's most famous conductors and orchestras and made her BBC Proms debut in 2015. She also sang Penelope in Monteverdi's Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria at the Barbican Hall in London with the Academy of Ancient Music and Richard Egarr.

The press praised her for 'the deep expressiveness with which she sang Monteverdi.' Barbara regularly gives lieder recitals with Julius Drake, Thomas Beijer and Phyllis Ferwerda. Contemporary composers write for her and in 2019 she made a great impression on press and public with her role debut as Brangäne in Wagner's Tristan und Isolde at Opera Leipzig.

About Nino Gvetadze

Nino Gvetadze (Tbilisi, Georgia) has a busy international career and is praised by critics worldwide. She has won several awards, including the Second Prize, Press Prize and Audience Award at the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition in 2008 and the prestigious Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award in 2010.

Nino Gvetadze studied in Tbilisi with Veronika Tumanishvili, Nodar Gabunia and Nana Khubutia. After graduating she moved to the Netherlands to continue her studies with Paul Komen and Jan Wijn. Since 2008 Nino plays in the Arosa Trio with Frederieke Saeijs and Maja Bogdanovic.

Nino Gvetadze has given recitals all over the world and worked with conductors such as Michel Plasson, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Michel Tabachnik, John Axelrod and Jaap van Zweden, and with orchestras such as the Rotterdam, The Hague, Brussels and Seoul symphony orchestras and the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bergische and Rheinische Philharmonie, and the Münchner Symphoniker. She has also toured with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Kammerakademie Potsdam and the Amsterdam Sinfonietta.
