The Teyber Trio - Bachs Goldberg-variaties

'An ode to silence' is what Bach's masterpiece, the 'Goldberg Variations' for keyboard, is called. Bach himself spoke of 'variations for the soul'. The Teyber Trio plays the 'Goldberg Variations' in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam in a popular arrangement for string trio by violinist Dmitri Sitkovetsky.

Bach's Goldberg Variations

The legend surrounding the inventive Goldberg Variations is attractive but not credible: Bach is said to have written them at the request of a German count who suffered from insomnia. The child prodigy Johann Gottlieb Goldberg should play Bach's composition as a musical pastime during the count's sleepless nights. It is more likely that Bach wrote this work, also called 'An ode to silence', for one of his gifted sons. The name Goldberg Variations does not come from Bach himself, he called them 'variations for the soul'.

The Teyber Trio

The three Tims of The Teyber Trio met each other more than ten years ago at the Young Talent department of the Royal Academy of Music in London. Praised by The Guardian for their 'virtuoso' and 'captivating performances', The Teyber Trio has grown into an internationally recognized ensemble. The three top musicians have previously recorded a number of movements from Bach's Goldberg Variations, in the arrangement for string trio by Dmitry Sitkovetsky. Now they play the complete work.
