'He sings like he plays'
Chet Baker not only played great trumpet, he could also sing beautifully. He was praised for the soft melancholic tone in his singing and trumpet playing: 'he sings as he plays'. It is mainly the records on which he plays and sings the trumpet that made him an idol. In 1955, when he toured Europe for the first time, he first gave an evening concert in the Kurhaus and then a night concert in the Concertgebouw, as was customary at the time. Baker died in Amsterdam from a fall from his hotel window in 1988.
Marcel Veenendaal
Tonight, the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw and DI-RECT singer Marcel Veenendaal honour this icon of jazz. Marcel's voice is one of thousands. In addition to his work with DI-RECT, he regularly appeared as a guest on DWDD, won a golden throat and enchanted the whole of the Netherlands with the song 'Soldier On'.
