Verdi’s Requiem
By Viotti and the Choir of the Dutch National Opera. In his Requiem, the mass for the dead, Verdi knew like no other how to capture human emotions in music. Lorenzo Viotti, the Netherlands Philharmonic and the Choir of the Dutch National Opera are a fantastically attuned opera team.

Verdi's Requiem
Like no other, he knew how to capture human emotions in music. In his Requiem , the mass for the dead, he made full use of that talent. No composer has succeeded better in conveying the fear and destruction on the day of judgment. The booming orchestra, the blaring trumpets, the overwhelming choir, the sound of mortal fear in the piccolo and the pounding bass drum; there is no escaping it. But Verdi's Requiem is much more than just the famous 'Dies Irae'. Take the opening: the subdued, penetrating sounds seem to come from nowhere and the first notes of the choir are like a murmuring prayer. Love, gratitude, happiness and mourning all pass by in this opera of life and death.
