Courageous stories retold
Unfortunately, this is a part of Surinamese and Dutch history that is often underexposed today. Slavery is, of course, far too extensive a subject to cover in such a short time. Felix paints a picture of what it was like then and takes you along in the same way that the enslaved ancestors often did: through oral traditions and music.
By continuing to tell the courageous stories of resistance heroes for generations, we preserve the heritage left by our ancestors. This is how we guard the narrative and remember where we stand and who we are. Because wherever you come from, whether you are Dutch or Surinamese, you have to know where you come from to know where you are going.
