Andriessen’s De Staat Asko|Schönberg
With De Staat (1976), Louis Andriessen wrote music for eternity. This highly personal mix of Stravinsky, American minimal, European avant-garde and jazz caused a shock wave in the international music world. Asko|Schönberg links this politically charged work to a brand new work by Oscar Bettison. Bettison studied with Andriessen and is composer in residence at Asko|Schönberg this season. The Staat van Andriessen performers include Asko|Schönberg, Ensemble Klang & students at the Conservatory of Amsterdam.
Andriessen’s De Staat Asko|Schönberg
Renowned work by Andriessen and new work by Oscar Bettison
When composing De Staat, Andriessen was inspired by minimal music, but applied minimalism in his own unique way. Bettison writes his piece for the same line-up as De Staat. He sees his work as a 'nocturnal chamber of wonders'. A group of pianos, harps and guitars form the core in the center of the stage, while some musicians change positions. The singers encourage the brass instruments and invoke the night.
