Arturo den Hartog & Mattias Spee - Spirituals
Enslaved Africans in the United States found strength and hope by singing spirituals, songs based on experiences of oppression and stories from the Old Testament. Many composers, such as the African-American composers Harry Burleigh and Moses Hogan, made arrangements for orally transmitted spirituals. In this concert, countertenor Arturo den Hartog and pianist Mattias Spee perform well-known and lesser-known spirituals in a program that ranges from sad and intimate to grand and festive.
Arturo den Hartog & Mattias Spee - Spirituals
A recital full of strength and hope
The Surinamese-Dutch countertenor Arturo den Hartog won the audience award of the Princess Christina Competition in 2021. He manifests himself as a champion of the work of underrated composers and has previously presented the programs A History of Female Black Composers and Surinaams Klassiek. Pianist Mattias van Spee is a good ally; he also has a fascination for music that has been unfairly forgotten.
This is a concert by Muziekgebouw Productiehuis.
