Elisabeth Leonskaja + Streichquartett der Staatskapelle Berlin - Schumanns Piano Quartet and Quintet

Elisabeth Leonskaja needs little introduction. This upright and highly respected pianist is now almost 80 and has played with virtually all the great classical musicians of her time, from Sviatoslav Richter to the Alban Berg Quartet. The grande dame of the grand piano brings energetic and moving chamber music by Schumann and Mendelssohn to Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ.

Elisabeth Leonskaja

Elisabeth Leonskaja has impressed in recent years with recitals in the Muziekgebouw, where she performed Beethoven's and Schubert's last sonatas. And in 2022, together with the Streichquartett der Staatskapelle Berlin, she will perform an 'imposing Brahms marathon' (The New Muse).

The string quartet that emerged from the Staatskapelle Berlin in 2017 has found a challenging partner in Elisabeth Leonskaja. Together they conjure up the Piano Quartet and the Piano Quintet by Robert Schumann, two exceptionally successful pieces full of zest for life. As a buffer between these pillars of romantic chamber music is the moving Sixth String Quartet by Felix Mendelssohn, a tribute to his sister Fanny, who died in May 1847. It was the last work he completed; he also died in November of the same year.
