Bands that transcend genres
This year, no fewer than four groups will perform with ambitious jazz musicians from the Netherlands. Together they broaden their horizons and enter new, unexplored territory. From classical to punk, from Afghan to Ethiopian and from theater to advertising music: everything is covered. This evening, space has been made on stage for Ponga, the trio Giuseppe Doronzo, Andy Moor & Frank Rosaly, Mark Lotz 'Freshta' and TELEVIZYON.
Ponga
Viola, guitars and percussion, this is Ponga's starting point for an unusual musical combination. This new trio radiates that anything is possible. Free improvisation is at its core, but classical music is also part of Ponga's rich background, all brought together with theatrical flair. Viola player Yanna Pelser also sings in the ensemble. Her bandmates Timon Koomen and Remco Menting previously played on our stage in the trio Kapok.
Giuseppe Doronzo, Andy Moor & Frank Rosaly
Be carried away by trance-like soundscapes inspired by ancient cultures from areas such as Ethiopia, Lesotho and Persia. This group fuses punk energy with unusual instruments, such as the Iranian bagpipes. The members have different backgrounds: Andy Moor comes from the pioneering Dutch band The Ex, Frank Rosaly from the avant-jazz of Chicago and Giuseppe Doronzo from contemporary jazz and world.
Mark Lotz 'Freshta'
With his new group Freshta, Mark Lotz honors the legacy of Freshta Kohistani. As a campaigner for women's rights and democracy in Afghanistan, she was murdered by the Taliban in 2020 at the age of 29. Despite her tragic fate, the music above all radiates hope. Freshta is dedicated to women activists in Asia and Africa. The project and the album of the same name emerged from a composition assignment for BumaStemra and the VNJJ.
TELEVIZYON
Think of TV commercials from the eighties and you will recognize the sound of TELEVIZYON. Or actually the other way around: TELEVIZYON recreates the sound of commercials in their music to give the audience a feeling of recognition. With singer and multi-instrumentalist Sanem Kalfa as bandleader and composer, TELEVIZYON takes you through different genres, such as pop and electronic music, always from the perspective of an improviser.
