Solstice
A special edition of Interplanetary Night focuses on 'solstice', the solstice that takes place on the longest day of the year. Solo artists, duos, bands and DJs are tearing down pillars and collapsing boxes, thanks to organizations such as Space Is the Place and WERF Records. The DJs of the Utrecht crew Keep It Moving keep the evening moving with dub, grooves and experiment.
On this Solstice Night, both Ada Rave and the duo Marta Warelis/Andy Moor celebrate their album releases on the Relative Pitch label from New York. Argentinian saxophonist Ada Rave is a well-known name in the Amsterdam improv scene. Her new solo album 'In Search of a Real World' is a selection of sound poems and images inspired by her search for the real world behind our daily virtual reality.
The Belgian bands Spook and Don Kapot are affiliated with WERF Records, the label of the Kaap arts center with which Space is the Place has close ties. Spook can be described as 'free country' or 'post western', a style mix in which elaborate themes and well-thought-out rhythms come together. With Simon Segers (De Beren Gieren, Black Flower) on drums, Nicolas Rombouts (Ottla, Dez Mona) on double bass and Filip Wauters (The Wodads, BackBack) on guitar and pedal steel.
Andy Moor is known for his propulsive electric guitar playing in The Ex and Dog Faced Hermans. He has previously collaborated with Marta Warelis, also based in Amsterdam, a pianist with a penchant for improvisation and experiment. Their new album 'Escape' on Relative Pitch Records shifts back and forth between intense, repetitive rhythms and serene passages. It is their first duo album together.
The power trio Don Kapot, founded in Brussels, blows away the audience at all kinds of festivals with irresistible free jazz, afrobeat and kraut punk full of samples and disruptive rhythms. The recently released album I Love Tempo on WERF Records was produced by Greg Saunier, drummer of the American band Deerhoof. Don Kapot consists of Giotis Damianidis (bass), Viktor Perdieus (baritone sax) and Jakob Warmenbol (drums).
