Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony

For the young top musicians from the Netherlands Youth Orchestra, the performance in The Concertgebouw is undoubtedly a highlight of the summer tour. This time they focused on Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony , a heroic piece that was appreciated by both supporters and opponents of the strict Soviet regime. The symphony is full of drama, humor and expression and ends with an overwhelming final movement.

Ravel's Tzigane with Rosanne Philippens

The idiosyncratic top violinist Rosanne Philippens always surprises her audience with her interpretations of known and unknown repertoire. Her compelling rendition of Maurice Ravel's Tzigane can be heard on her debut album from 2013 in the version for violin and piano. She now solos with the Youth Orchestra of the Netherlands. Tonight Philippens combines Ravel's virtuoso work full of gypsy sounds and acrobatic violin playing with another world-famous violin piece, Poème by Ernest Chausson.
