Although some think that the operetta genre is superficial, this assumption is actually based on a misunderstanding. The characters' extravagant lifestyles - their tendency to excess and their desire for pleasure - is often humorously magnified. This is - contrary to what people think - precisely a criticism of the superficiality and emptiness of a life that is only about fun and frivolity. The champagne that flows freely does not represent vulgar pleasure, but a temporary escape from the raging industrial revolution.
