Papayebrass

The Latin American summer starts in the Rijp! This time, organizer Cartouche has something very special: the most popular brass band from the Colombian-Caribbean area is coming to De Rijp during the European tour. Seven wind players and one drummer will attend the Grote Kerk on 22 June for a spectacular performance.

Swinging Latin American music

Papayebrass's music is a mix of Colombian papayeras (wind orchestras) and North American brass bands. Think of party music, dance music, or South American (or Colombian) carnival music, and then you can place this music. Occasionally, Papayebrass also plays Lucho Bermúdeze classics (the most famous Colombian big band from the 50s-60s) and international songs.

The members of Papayebrass come from Santo Tomás, near the city of Barranquilla (Northern Colombia, on the Caribbean Sea). To escape drug violence, the eight musicians of Papayebrass turned to music in their youth. The music school was their safe haven. The 8 young boys became older and more professional. Music training was followed, and the performance of their performances became not only a literal feast to listen to but also to watch.

They have been together professionally since 2016 and have two goals: preserving the papayeras music and spreading the message that there is a way out of the spiral of violence that is often so common in Latin America.
