About REFLEX
In the BIMHUIS Productions series REFLEX, makers are invited to reflect on the world and society. The composer of this edition is pianist Marta Warelis. She assembled a group of well-known improvising musicians from Amsterdam and Chicago, among others. They start from silence, elements of folk music, and deep grooves and move towards freedom and transformation.
In this new band, Marta Warelis plays piano and synthesizer against the clarinets of Karen Ng and Ab Baars and the trumpet of Ben LaMar Gay, who comes forward as a singing voice. Bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and drummer Frank Rosaly lay the foundation.
Marta Warelis prefers improvisation and experimentation in all kinds of styles, such as 'instant composing' based on new sounds and influences. The originally Polish improviser explores the richness of sound of the acoustic piano and the electronic synthesizer. Since 2019, she has been part of the Amsterdam improv collective Doek.
