Quatuor Agate
The French string quartet Quatuor Agate presents Outlaws , music by composers who had to fight for their existence and their music. 'Perhaps because of a predilection for the sensational, we decided to bring together 'outlaw' musicians', say the four string players. Carlo Gesualdo was a composer, prince and murderer; Ethel Smyth, a composer, feminist activist and openly lesbian; Shostakovich struggled with the Soviet regime and could not write freely. Quatuor Agate: 'They all had to answer for their actions or opinions.' Outlaws is a unique programme by an up-and-coming quartet.
