Sons of Chipotle
Sons of Chipotle is what happens when two free spirits join forces for an unbridled sonic expedition. Star cellist Anssi Karttunen and all-rounder John Paul Jones are giants in their own domain. Armed with electronics, piano and cello, they are excited to make their Dutch debut at the Kaija Saariaho Festival. Jones and Karttunen were both good friends with Kaija Saariaho and it comes as no surprise that she was a big fan of the duo. Karttunen has been involved with all of Saariaho’s cello works since they both moved to Paris in the eighties.

Musical boundaries disappear
Numerous composers have written new works for Anssi Karttunen, including Saariaho, of whom he premiered several pieces. John Paul Jones, world-famous as co-founder and legendary multi-instrumentalist of Led Zeppelin, has worked with a wide range of artists since the early 1960s as a bandleader, arranger and composer. It is a special experience to see two of the best musicians in the world improvising together. Both musicians are known for their curious minds, always willing to learn and explore. When they improvise, boundaries disappear, and they are free to move beyond preconceptions, across continents. In a world of conflict and refugees, Sons of Chipotle want music to be a refuge of openness.
This concert is part of the Saariaho Festival, which will take place from 13 to 16 March 2025 in the Muziekgebouw and Bimhuis.
