The Spirit of Gambo - Fireworks in the Twilight
Exuberant playing pleasure, drive, and musicianship are the strengths of gamba consort The Spirit of Gambo. The repertoire includes music from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries by Dowland, Purcell and Bach, among others. The ensemble is an initiative of Freek Borstlap and Gesina Liedmeier, the other two regular players are Ivanka Neeleman and Thomas Baeté. The Spirit of Gambo performs in De Waalse Kerk.

Fireworks in the twilight
It was a stunning ending for the viola da gamba, which had to make way for the violin family in the Baroque. Composers on both sides of the North Sea signed for a final revival: in England, where Lawes, Locke and Purcell made consort music peak, and on the continent, with icons such as Charpentier and Legrenzi. The Spirit of Gambo combines the ripest fruits of the Gambo repertoire with transcriptions of Bach and Cabanilles. The Spirit of Gambo plays on gambas that Liedmeier built especially for the ensemble. The Spirit of Gambo received the Diapason d'Or for the CD Jenkins consort music of four parts.
