A concert, poetry performance and a yin yoga class in one. This is the formula of the weekly yoga concerts. Live improvised music, yoga postures, and mystical poetry are the ingredients for a journey inside. This morning, the renowned cellist Maya Fridman will bring her improvisations to the mat, André Meeusen is guiding the yin yoga, designed around a poem. Join us at Jungle in the Tweede van Swindenstraat 26.

Musician priestess

The visit of Maya Fridman promises a remarkable Song of Yoga. Dutch newspaper the Volkskrant calls her ‘the cello priestess’, and her music as ‘poignant, due to the intensity, the beauty, and the purity of Fridmans play’. Tv network NPO describes her as a ‘phenomenon’.

Improvisation is etched in her being - beside her constructed compositions, she made several highly acclaimed albums based on improvisations with other musicians. Time and again, new album releases brought her in best-album-of-the-year lists of newspapers, praising her ‘impeccable cello technique’ (NRC) and ‘lived through play’. Weekly De Groene Amsterdammer commented: ��Sound surges out of the depth, from low and wide to high and rippling like a handheld fan.’

What brings such a celebrated cellist, that performs in large concert halls and festivals around the world, to our own little Jungle? The answer lies in the intentions behind her music, with compositions often inspired by spiritual themes and mystical poems. She describes performing as prayer, with a fascination for ‘musical rituals in an intimate setting��. Her music carries a deep spirituality. As if she looks to express the silence from which her notes originate.

Yin Yoga

The calm, meditative yet intense postures of yin yoga allow to sink deeper into consciousness, beyond the patterns of the mind. On the yogamat, physical sensations weave together with the musical improvisations. The mind becomes quieter, opening space to meet the music and poetry in the heart.

Practical info

Book your ticket here. The venue opens at 10:45 am, the yoga concert starts at 11 am and lasts one and a half hour. Bring your mat if possible, and a water bottle and props if you want. If you don’t have a mat, you can borrow one. The yoga instructions and poetry will be bilingual.
