Lezing door muziekauteur Harvey Sachs : Schönberg: Why He Matters
American music historian Harvey Sachs received rave reviews for his book Schoenberg: Why He Matters, published last year. More than a biography, Sachs argues for the enduring importance of Schoenberg's musical legacy, which extends beyond his twelve-tone system. "An extraordinarily valuable overview of the work of this eternally controversial and misunderstood giant of 20th-century music," according to composer John Adams.

The importance of Schoenberg's musical legacy
Sachs writes passionately and accessibly about Schoenberg's radical ideas. And he also portrays him as a passionate Brahms lover. An enthusiastic player of Johann Straus' waltzes who, against his will, drew the ultimate consequence from the musical path that Wagner had taken with his ever-expanding harmonies. 'Someone had to do it', he said. And yet: the last word that Schoenberg spoke on his deathbed was 'harmony'.
