Supergroup
Since 2016, pianist Benoît Delbecq has led a true supergroup that was founded in New York. Tenor saxophonist Mark Turner, whose solo career has taken off enormously, excels with thoughtful melody lines, just like on his successful albums under his own name on ECM Records. The harmonious interplay of double bassist John Hébert and drummer Gerald Cleaver is reminiscent of their previous work with the legendary jazz pianist Andrew Hill. Benoît Delbecq composes for these musicians and processes their sounds from behind the piano using live electronics. He subtly picks up passages that return as ghostly apparitions.
'Gentle Ghosts' is the name of the quartet's recent album, which was released by the French festival Jazzdor. Pianist Benoît Delbecq sets his own pace in French jazz, unaffected by trends. From the 1990s he played with us in various formations, including with Fred Hersch and Han Bennink.
