Diaspora Radio

Diaspora Radio, born as a radio show on Echobox Radio, has evolved into a platform where makers and creatives share their stories of migration, bi-culturalism, identity and makership. What started as a place for voices from the SWANA (South West Asia & North Africa) diaspora to be heard, has now grown into a platform that also builds bridges between different cultures and experiences.

Live act 23.00-00.00 ABADIR & Hogir

Hogir Göregen and ABADIR (Rami Abadir) merge traditional percussion and contemporary electronic music in an unprecedented way. Hogir, born in Tatvan, Turkey, brings a wealth of cultural influences and rhythmic diversity to his performances with his virtuosity on percussion instruments. His performances range from Funk and Free Jazz to experimental and baroque orchestral music, always striving for a unique synthesis of oriental and western sounds. ABADIR, a Berlin-based producer and sound designer from Cairo, adds his experimental electronics, inspired by memories of religious rituals and cultural artifacts. His latest album Ison, released on SVBKVLT, reinterprets his childhood memories of Coptic, Syriac, Maronite, Greek Orthodox and Catholic services and choirs. Together they create an immersive experience in which oriental sounds and futuristic sounds resound, resulting in an intense, almost surreal musical journey.

00:30-01:15 Karima el Fillali

Karima el Fillali (1987) is a Dutch singer and songwriter, known for her enchanting voice and deeply moving live performances. El Fillali gives traditional Arabic music a 21st century update. She uses age-old poetry by Sufi mystics such as Mansur al-Hallaj and Ibn Arabi, about love, light and darkness, joy and sorrow. At the same time, her music is strongly influenced by Western classical music, hip hop and art pop. During her travels to Morocco, she became fascinated by the spiritual music of her homeland and started studying Arabic and delving into traditional music styles such as gnawa and tarab. In 2021, she released her debut EP Bihar El Hawa, in which she combines ancient Sufi poetry and traditional Arabic singing techniques with modern composition, in which live electronics and traditional instruments come together.
