Driss El Maloumi Trio & Watar Quintet
The beauty of the oud, the Arabic lute, is embedded in classical strings. Because of his pure, fragile playing, Driss El Maloumi is also called the 'wizard of the oud'. The Moroccan composer performs at the Bimhuis.

About Driss El Maloumi
Born in Agadir, Morocco, Driss El Maloumi has worked with many different ensembles and musicians, including Jordi Savall, Debashish Bhattacharya and Montserrat Figueras. He has composed for theatre and film, among others. Driss forms his trio with two percussionists, his younger brother Saïd El Maloumi and Lahoucine Baqir.
As a child, he was already enchanted by orchestras he heard in films, the violins and harmonies. For years, he has been toying with the idea of working with a chamber orchestra. After two years of preparation, this dream finally comes true with the project Tafassil, in which the strings and percussion of his trio intertwine with the classical string instruments of the Watar Quintet. While Driss was composing for Tafassil, he observed daily life. All kinds of fleeting moments pass by: the sunrise, people starting work, parents taking their children to school and the smells and colours of daily life. But he also reflects on how these seemingly unimportant details relate to the overwhelming world stage.
