Dutch Student Chamber Choir - Voices of the City

This February, the Dutch Student Chamber Choir will sing Voices of the City. During a tour of ten concerts throughout the country, the audience will be surrounded by the noise of the city; both in the city sounds of the present, and of the city of a hundred years ago. Led by conductor Lodewijk van der Ree, the singers will make their way through the history of the city to find a place in modern urban life.

In a varied program of old and modern music, the choir sings about the versatility of the city. On the one hand, the challenges and problems that city dwellers have had to deal with for centuries, such as displacement, isolation and overstimulation. On the other hand, the feeling of pride, solidarity and feeling at home in the city.

This versatility is also reflected in the program. The focus is on Elégie pour les villes détruites by Dutch composer Ton de Leeuw, the darkest point in the program, and the festive Fest- und Gedenksprüche by Johannes Brahms. In addition, And the Swallow by Caroline Shaw, arrangements of the Beatles, and a new work by commissioned composer Celia Swart will also be reviewed.

Accordion accompaniment by soloist Ilse Kok forms the common thread and director Mirte Bulsink provides the visual context that makes the concert an impressive whole. The concert promises to be an immersive musical journey that goes beyond the boundaries of a conventional choir concert, characteristic of this unique project choir that has been nurturing high-quality amateur talent since 1974.
