Easter Concert
Festive and atmospheric music by Felix Mendelssohn will be heard on Easter Sunday. The first three parts of the symphony are purely instrumental, but in the final part it gets a deeper, Biblical layer through the addition of choir and vocal soloists. This is very appropriate on Easter Sunday, the day on which the resurrection of Jesus is celebrated.
Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 2 'Lobgesang'
Felix Mendelssohn's Second Symphony is, by its length and the addition of a choir and vocal soloists in the final movement, a continuation of Beethoven's Ninth . He composed the symphony-cantata to celebrate four centuries of printing, with the Bible as the 'book of books' in mind. After a cheerful opening movement, Mendelssohn strings together highlight after highlight in this monumental choral symphony.
