Rebetiko

This performance features a 60-minute musical suite that beautifully showcases the exchange of Greek and Turkish instrumental and vocal traditions, including Rebetiko and classical Ottoman music. A genre that originated in bustling urban centers such as Athens and Istanbul, Rebetiko is a mesmerizing fusion of musical styles inspired by Byzantine, Turkish, Armenian, Jewish and Arabic influences.

The Mediterraneo band, founded in 2021 in the Netherlands, unites six talented musicians from various Mediterranean countries, including Syria, Turkey and Greece, who share a deep passion for music and an in-depth knowledge of Mediterranean musical traditions. The band offers a unique blend of classical Arabic, Greek and Turkish compositions, adding Western instruments to the rich world of Makam music. Their background in jazz, Western classical music and modal traditions adds a modern touch to this enchanting musical journey. This project is sponsored by AFK.
