Ian Bostridge, Julius Drake in Schubert and the Schumanns
They have been sharing the stage together for more than a quarter of a century: the tenor Ian Bostridge and the pianist Julius Drake. “We're dealing with the greatest music of all time, which keeps our musical relationship alive and engaging,” Drake said. And really good music, he thinks, goes its own way as soon as you perform it. Two top musicians will perform in the Kleine Zaal in a rich program tailored to their needs. Tonight we will hear works by Schubert, Schumann, Mahler and Henze.

Rückert, Schubert and the Schumanns
The literary giant Friedrich Rückert (1788-1866) was a prolific poet who wrote almost ten thousand poems. He was also a polyglot, dramatist and orientalist – he translated poems from Arabic. Rückert was professor of oriental languages and culture at the universities of Würzburg and Heidelberg. His poems have been performed by many great composers, including Franz Schubert, Robert and Clara Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Hugo Wolf, Paul Hindemith and Alban Berg. The most famous settings include Mahler's Rückert-Lieder .
