Sweelinck and soloist

The Sweelinck Orchestra was founded in 1878, making it the oldest symphony orchestra in Amsterdam. The orchestra consists of about seventy enthusiastic students from universities in both Amsterdam and other cities who enjoy making music together at a high level. The 23-year-old soloist, Noa Wildschut, has been known in the international classical music world for years and therefore does not often play with an orchestra full of peers. Together with conductor Jurjen Hempel, they put on a concert full of energy and passion.

The pieces

The pieces are connected by the theme 'Schijn', which has several meanings. Tchaikovsky had to keep up appearances about his homosexuality and could not dedicate his violin concerto to his lover, who was a man. For Shostakovich, keeping up appearances was necessary under Stalin's strict regime, which he opposed in his ironic Ninth Symphony. Finally, Wagenaar's 'The Taming of the Shrew' and Rossini's well-known 'Ouvertüre 'Guillaume Tell' bring sunshine after the storm and bless the listener with their triumphant melodies.
