Paul Lewis - Sonata

Pianistic imagination from Beethoven to Larcher in Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ. 'Sonata' is the equally businesslike and simple title of the new piano solo work by Thomas Larcher. But Larcher's music is never simple or businesslike, certainly not when performed by the British master pianist and Beethoven specialist Paul Lewis.

About Paul Lewis

Paul Lewis, the son of a Liverpool dockworker, was captivated by Beethoven's music at the age of eight. The legendary Austrian pianist Alfred Brendel – a fellow countryman of Larcher – is his great inspiration, mentor and teacher. From Brendel Lewis learned that you are a musician first and a pianist second. Lewis previously premiered a work for piano solo by Larcher. NRC wrote about his debut in the Muziekgebouw in 2017: 'A fine example of pianistism at the cutting edge.'

The Times once called Larcher's communicative and compelling music 'one of the wonders of the century'. In addition to Larcher, Lewis also plays classical sonatas by Beethoven and Schubert, and the dreamy, melancholic Three Intermezzi by Brahms.
