Sinfonietta Cracovia - Glass, Kulenty en Kilar
Visual Polish and American minimal music in Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ. Sinfonietta Cracovia comes from the historic city of Krakow, where the Polish kings once resided. The chamber orchestra makes its debut in the Muziekgebouw with American minimal music and closely related accessible Polish music. Polish composer Hanna Kulenty, who studied with Louis Andriessen in the 1980s, wrote a new work for trumpet, bass trombone and string orchestra. The premiere will be performed this evening. The orchestra will perform a true classic by minimalist Philip Glass, the 'Third Symphony'.

Wojciech Kilar
The other Polish composers colour the minimalistic basis more romantically and freely than the strictly conceptual Americans Reich and Glass. Andrzej Panufnik and Wojciech Kilar paint landscapes in cinematic atmospheres. Kilar was also a celebrated film composer and wrote, among other things, the prize-winning score for the film The Pianist about Władysław Szpilman. Hanna Kulenty writes what she herself calls 'musique surrealistique': appealing and visual music full of repetitive, rhythmic elements as we know them from Reich and Glass.
