About Wajdi Riahi

The young pianist Wajdi Riahi moves smoothly between different worlds: his classical training, his passion for jazz and his North African background. That his music is more than the sum of its parts, he proves on the album Essia . The album named after his mother draws inspiration from his hometown Tunis and the local Stambeli rituals. The rhythms intertwined with Stambeli form the basis of Wajdi Riahi's trio. In this, he supplements his piano playing with Fender Rhodes and his own voice. Basile Rahola's double bass provides solid support. Pierre Hurty's drums are accentuated by the Krakebs, metal castanets used in Stambeli and related styles such as Gnawa.
