Seductive world
In FAKE NEWS, South African choreographer Nelisiwe Xaba combines performance and digital art. She explores the concepts of disinformation, conspiracy theories and science denial, whose influence on social media and traditional media has become indispensable. FAKE NEWS shows how the media creates a seductive world of meaning and packages it in fake news. Xaba deconstructs this world in a dance performance in which live performance transforms into animation and in which the boundaries between body and screen, reality and illusion, blur.
The performance critiques contemporary socio-political and cultural society. It criticizes the new normal in which the emerging dominance of virtual presence and encounters promotes alienation and the risk of disinformation. FAKE NEWS was previously shown at National Arts Festival ZA and ICA Live Art Festival Cape Town.
