Amsterdam institutions unite for a fairer food future
Local collaboration to push the food transition
Twelve major organisations in Amsterdam – from hospitals to universities and the municipality itself – have committed to making healthy, sustainable, and fair food the norm across the city. Together, they serve around 35,000 meals daily, influencing not just what’s on the menu, but the food system as a whole.
Under the new covenant “Together we eat Amsterdam healthy, sustainable and fair,” the signatories have set ambitious targets for 2030:
- 60% plant-based protein
- 80% of offerings within the Dutch Nutrition Centre’s Wheel of Five
- 25% organic procurement
- 50% less food waste compared to 2015
Led by the Municipality of Amsterdam and supported by FoodCLIC, the Athena Institute, and Voedsel Verbindt, the initiative aims to align food purchasing with sustainable goals and invites other organisations across the city to join the movement.
This united effort highlights how institutional collaboration can shape a healthier, greener future for Amsterdam. The covenant also emphasises local entrepreneurship, food equity, and better access to plant-based and nutritious options across neighbourhoods, proving that systemic change begins with collective action.
Amsterdam leading the food transition
Local individuals and companies are dedicated to reimagining our relationship with food and creating new and exciting approaches to nourishment. Amsterdam is actively working towards a global food transition with healthier, more sustainable diets.
By working together, local institutions are demonstrating how public procurement can support climate goals, reduce inequality, and create more resilient food systems. The city is a hotbed of impact-driven companies like Crisp, Growy, The Waste Transformers, and De Nieuwe Keuken, which are actively promoting the transition towards more sustainable and regional food systems.
