Ahmed
Challenging group improvisation in the spirit of the adventurous American bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik (1927-1993). For each performance, the group Ahmed selects a composition by Ahmed Abdul-Malik, a pioneer in the crossing of jazz and oriental music. This serves as the basis for an improvisation that can have a different character each time, often with an emphasis on rhythm and groove.

Physical and exciting interplay
The core is a melody, which can easily lead to intense physical and rousing interplay, as evidenced by the group's recent album, Wood Blues, on the Astral Spirits label. The band received rave reviews in Pitchfork, Downbeat and The Wire, among others. Ahmed is a platform for 4 musicians from London, Berlin and Paris, each following their own path in improvised music. At every performance of the band, they come together with renewed energy. The quartet is led by British pianist Pat Thomas, who has been fascinated by Ahmed Abdul-Malik since the 80s. Ahmed Abdul-Malik played with greats such as Art Blakey and Coleman Hawkins, experimented with traditional oriental string instruments and explored oriental music on albums such as Jazz Sahara and East Meets West.
