Nawras Altaky Septet: Arise! Journey of Resilience

In the BIMHUIS Productions series REFLEX we invite musicians to reflect on the world and society. This edition revolves around the new compositions for the project premiere ‘Arise!’ by Nawras Altaky. Coming from Syria, the singer and player of the oud, the Arabic lute, formed his own ensemble with well-known musicians from The Netherlands. ‘Arise!’ is a tribute to the unwavering spirit of survivors around the world, a reminder that within each of us lies the potential for greatness, waiting for an opportunity to blossom. Nawras dedicates this performance to all those who dare to dream, who keep their hope alive, and who contribute their unique light to the journey of life. What makes Nawras Altaky’s music and improvisations special is the way he organically combines jazz, Arabic maqam, classical counterpoint and elements from contemporary music. His enemble features players that have appeared on our stage before, such as viola player Oene van Geel and guitarist Teis Semey. ‘Altaky has a fascinating, warm baritone with which he can sing with breathtaking, colourful softness, effectively building up tension through his sublime sense of timing’ (NRC).
