Sheherazade by Rimsky-Korsakov

Partly thanks to Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, the Arabian fairy tales of the One Thousand and One Nights are as popular as ever; his symphonic poem Sheherazade is a favourite repertoire piece of symphony orchestras. The exotic fairy tales, as do the evil sultan and the beautiful Sheherazade, come to life. The princess manages to postpone her announced execution repeatedly by enchanting the sultan with her storytelling skills. Pay particular attention to the concertmaster's challenging and rewarding violin solo, which expresses Sheherazade's seductive voice.

Haydn's cello concerto

The Jenaer Philharmonie combines the musical fairytale world of Rimsky-Korsakov with Haydn's Cello Concerto in D Major. The soloist is the Dutch cello star Ella van Poucke. According to the press, she has 'a beautiful, song-rich, honey-like tone', and her interpretations are 'intuitive and at the same time full of depth'. She will undoubtedly surprise the audience with her rendition of Joseph Haydn's elegant but also very challenging cello concerto for the cellist.
