Sun-Mi Hong Quintet
Korean drummer Sun-Mi Hong and 'remarkably original composer', according to Downbeat, presents her new album at the Bimhuis. Her passion for drums led her down many steep paths and winding roads, but eventually Sun-Mi Hong ended up in Amsterdam. Here she developed into one of the most inventive composing drummers of her generation.
Sun-Mi Hong Quintet
New album
She plays music from her new album on Edition Records, together with her quintet. In this album she gathered players who, like her, came from far away and supported each other over the years and gave each other a feeling of home in their new hometown. The new songs reflect the strengths of each member of the group. The album captures the experiences and emotions of the group that took place during the making process. Themes such as melancholy and innocence are strongly present, with Sun-Mi Hong drawing inspiration from her personal life and her South Korean heritage. Tracks such as 'Meaning of a Nest', 'Escapism' and 'Heartstone' show a balance between dynamic energy and stillness.
